Rammagerðin, Harpa

The Rammagerðin flagship store in Harpa Concert Hall functions as a "building within a building," utilizing a modular wooden scaffolding system to create a tactile counterpoint to the hall’s glass and steel. This timber intervention acts as a flexible armature, allowing the retail landscape to be reconfigured to suit everything from delicate jewelry to furniture. By adopting the ephemeral logic of scaffolding, the design evokes a workshop atmosphere rather than a static showroom.

Architecturally, the structure’s skeletal form maintains visual permeability, ensuring that the light play from the Ólafur Elíasson façade continues to flow through the space. This approach respects Harpa’s monumental volume with a lightweight, sustainable footprint, creating a versatile stage for Icelandic design that can evolve alongside the crafts it displays.
