Lava Exhibition

The Lava exhibition is an immersive and interactive experience that communicates Iceland’s geological activity through movement, participation and sensory engagement. Combining scientific data, physical installations and digital interaction, the exhibition translates complex natural processes into accessible and engaging experiences for visitors of all ages.

The LAVA exhibition is designed as an immersive environment where visitors actively engage with Iceland’s geological systems and natural forces. Developed alongside the architecture, the exhibition uses spatial sequences, interactive installations and sensory experiences to communicate complex scientific knowledge in an intuitive and accessible way.

Rather than directly replicating nature, the exhibition reinterprets geological phenomena through abstraction, allowing the essence of volcanic activity, earthquakes and tectonic movement to emerge through light, sound, movement and interaction. Spaces alternate between compression and openness, darkness and light, creating emotional shifts that support feelings of curiosity, tension, excitement and discovery.

Interactive participation is central to the experience. Visitors are encouraged to shake, turn, point and touch installations, becoming active participants in the flow of information rather than passive observers. Real-time seismic data from Icelandic monitoring systems is integrated into several exhibits, allowing guests to experience ongoing geological activity across the country.

Large-scale installations form key moments throughout the exhibition. These include a physical timeline of Icelandic eruptions, immersive projection environments, earthquake simulators, interactive geological models and sculptural elements generated from topographic and scientific data. Every installation is developed using accurate geological research in collaboration with Icelandic institutions and universities.

Together, architecture, storytelling and technology create an exhibition environment where scientific understanding and sensory experience are closely intertwined.
