Designed by Basalt Architects, the space is located at the heart of the departures store at Keflavík International Airport. Conceived as a distinctive setting for Icelandic brands, it celebrates local identity through architecture, materials and spatial experience.

The design draws inspiration from water in its many forms, from glacial rivers and geothermal lagoons to the steam rising from hot springs. A continuous milky blue floor references the distinctive waters of the Blue Lagoon, creating a soft, fluid foundation for the space. Above, a suspended installation of delicate metal chains evokes the movement and atmospheric qualities of geothermal steam.

Sculptural display elements, manufactured by Nagami using 3D-printing technology and recycled plastic, partly recovered from the ocean, introduce forms and textures reminiscent of ice. Their smooth, flowing surfaces contrast with the rugged character of volcanic materials, reflecting the interplay between water, ice and lava that defines Iceland’s landscape.

The result is a contemporary interpretation of Icelandic nature, where contrasting textures, colors and forms create an immersive architectural experience. Rather than reproducing the landscape literally, the design captures its atmosphere and elemental qualities, providing a memorable setting for Icelandic products and a final connection to the country for departing travelers.

The project forms part of the wider redevelopment of ÍSLAND Duty Free by Gebr. Heinemann, developed in collaboration with Checkland Kindleysides.
