Garðurinn Food Hall

Garðurinn Food Hall is a new dining destination within Smáralind shopping center, bringing together thirteen restaurants in a unified architectural setting. Designed as an open and social environment, the space expands the shopping centre’s role beyond retail, strengthening activity and establishing a lively setting for both everyday dining and evening use.

The project accommodates close to 600 guests and forms part of a broader transformation of Smáralind, where the programme is expanded to include dining, social and civic functions. Alongside the food hall, a public library is being introduced, marking a shift toward a more diverse and publicly oriented environment. Together, these additions reposition the centre as a place for everyday life, extending its relevance beyond shopping. Located partly within a new extension, the food hall introduces a more open and outward-facing edge to the building. Since opening, the development has had a measurable impact, with a significant increase in visitor numbers, reaching up to 20–25% above typical levels. Both attendance and operator turnover have exceeded expectations.

The design is based on creating a cohesive environment that accommodates variety and flexibility. Each restaurant maintains its own identity while being part of a larger spatial composition. The layout supports different modes of use, from short visits to longer stays, with a range of seating types and scales that enable both individual and collective experiences. Movement through the space is fluid, reinforcing the sense of a shared and active social setting.

Material and spatial strategies focus on warmth, openness and durability. The extension is conceived as a light-filled volume, bringing natural light into the interior and creating a more generous spatial experience. Natural materials and varied seating environments contribute to a comfortable atmosphere, while careful acoustic considerations support the intensity of use.

Together, these elements position Garðurinn as a key addition to Smáralind, supporting its development into a more mixed-use and socially active destination within the urban fabric.
