The Retreat at Blue Lagoon

Embedded within a 751-year-old lava field in the Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark, The Retreat is shaped through a process of discovery and adaptation. The architecture settles into the volcanic terrain, allowing lava formations to define spaces and dissolve the boundary between landscape and building.

The Retreat forms part of the broader Blue Lagoon destination, where architecture, landscape and geothermal resources have gradually evolved together over decades. Building on the same design principles as the original Blue Lagoon facilities, the project continues the ambition of allowing the volcanic landscape and geothermal environment to shape the visitor experience.

The retreat encompasses a spa, luxury hotel, restaurant and a new geothermal lagoon that connects to the existing Blue Lagoon. Surrounded by moss-covered rock, geothermal seawater, and volcanic horizons, the Retreat is both physically and conceptually anchored in its site. The architecture emerges gradually, allowing the natural lava formations to form both the perimeter of the lagoon and the interior walls of the spa.

From early planning through construction, the team worked in close dialogue with the land, allowing geological discoveries to redirect the design to incorporate these unexpected features. The result is a destination where the seamless interplay of lava, moss, and water is woven into every step of the guest’s journey.

The Retreat is organized into two wings—one housing the spa facilities and the other the luxury suites—which converge in the hotel lobby and connect to the existing Blue Lagoon buildings. The restaurant is located on the top floor of the central core, offering panoramic views across the entire complex.

Covering more than 4000 square meters, the Retreat Spa opens new dimensions of tranquillity and transformation. The 62 suites, ranging in size from 40 sqm to 200 sqm, are essentially one-sided, each with direct access to the lagoon. The spa experience is extended into each room with freestanding baths and showers with a view.

The material palette of raw, tactile, and natural materials was selected for durability in Iceland’s extreme climate, resistance to the active ingredients of the Blue Lagoon, and resonance with the surrounding landscape. The building is predominantly constructed of concrete, much of it precast to reduce the environmental impact of onsite construction. Warm walnut and jatoba woods are juxtaposed with concrete and lava surfaces to establish an authentic, inviting atmosphere. The subtle profusion of raw, tactile and natural materials penetrates every detail of the structure, producing a realm of deep comfort inspired by the landscape.
