Basalt Architects selected to design a Cultural Centre

New vibrant destination in Smáralind

Basalt Architects has been selected as the winning team to design a new cultural centre in Smáralind, marking an important step in the continued development of the area as a vibrant destination for culture and everyday life.

The project will be located within a 900 m² space in the eastern part of the shopping centre and is envisioned as an open and dynamic environment. The programme brings together a public library, event facilities, and creative workspaces, creating a flexible setting for a diverse group of users and activities.

The evaluation of proposals placed strong emphasis on a clear and robust concept, accessibility, spatial flow, flexibility, and usability. Sustainability, feasibility, and the effective use of existing infrastructure were also key criteria, alongside the project’s ability to strengthen the relationship between Smáralind and the cultural life of Kópavogur. The jury concluded that Basalt’s proposal provides a solid and compelling foundation for the next phases of design and development.

The new cultural centre forms part of a broader transformation of Smáralind, led by Heimar, which has seen a significant increase in visitor numbers and an expanded mix of retail, services, dining, and events. Recent additions—including the opening of Garðurinn food hall also designed by Basalt architects and upgrades to cinema facilities—have contributed to strengthening the overall experience and appeal of the destination.

Developed in collaboration with Heimar and Kópavogsbær, the cultural centre aims to further reinforce Smáralind’s role as a central hub for community life in the capital region.

The centre is expected to open in spring 2027.
